Tips & Local Insights

  • Money
2 Belize dollars equal 1 USD. Most major credit cards are accepted (except Discover) at many restaurants and gift shops. You may notice a small surcharge on your receipt. Some tour operators also accept credit cards. However, there are still restaurants and tours that are cash only—Belize dollars or USD are both accepted. There are a few ATMs at the banks on the island. Tourists typically find they need more cash than expected.
  • Getting Around
Rent bikes or golf carts, or take a golf cart taxi. Walking is also an option, of course. The southern part of the island is only about 1 mile long and about ½ mile wide. Stay hydrated—bring a bottle of water with you.
  • Food
There are over 50 restaurants on the island, ranging from street vendors to semi-formal dining. We recommend trying the local foods and really getting lost in the experience. A few grocery stores carry basic essentials. Local foods are generally more affordable, while imported items can be expensive. You can also find fresh fruits, juices, and vegetables at local stands.
  • Getting To/From the Island
Water taxis include San Pedro Express and Sprinter Ferry, both taking about 45 minutes to 1 hour to/from the mainland and about 30 minutes to Ambergris Caye. Tropic Air and Maya Air are the two airlines that service Caye Caulker, with flight times around 10–15 minutes. The views from the air are stunning—it's like a mini excursion in itself!
  • Don’t Fall for It
Some locals may claim they’re collecting for school sports or local tours—but they’re not legitimate. If you want to give back, visit Ocean Academy, the island’s local high school. You can donate directly through their website, which lists needed items. Ocean Academy also offers island tours led by high school students.
  • Bugs
Mosquitoes and sand flies tend to come out around the “bewitching hour,” usually between 4–5 PM. Be sure to bring bug spray or try the local homemade oils available in nearby shops.
  • Sun
Don’t let sunburn ruin your vacation. Start your day with sunscreen—you’ll still tan with SPF 50–70. Be sure to lotion up before snorkeling, especially on your back and legs, and consider wearing a sun shirt. You’ll thank us later!
  • Safety
Lock your bikes and condo doors. Keep your phone, purse, and sunglasses close. Most crime is petty theft—if you leave something unattended, it may not be there when you return.
  • Delivery
There is a grocery store, laundry service, and a couple of restaurants that will deliver to South Point.

Exploring Mainland Belize

Beyond the island

Belize’s mainland offers a wide range of unforgettable adventures. From ancient ruins to wildlife sanctuaries, jungle ziplines to artisan markets, there’s no shortage of ways to immerse yourself in the culture, nature, and history of this beautiful country. Whether you're exploring underground caves, spotting exotic animals, or learning about traditional crafts, inland Belize has something for every traveler.

Ancient Maya Sites

Discover Belize's rich history by visiting ancient Maya cities nestled deep in the rainforest. Knowledgeable guides will bring these sites to life, sharing stories of a once-great civilization. Many tours also include cave exploration and depart from the municipal airport or water taxi terminal. Be sure to check physical requirements before booking.

Belize Zoo

Located near Belize City, the Belize Zoo offers a chance to see native species up close in a natural setting. You'll encounter the tapir (Belize's national animal), black howler monkeys, jaguars, and the vibrant keel-billed toucan, the country's national bird. It's a great introduction to Belize's incredible biodiversity.

Howler Monkey Sanctuary

Just 20 miles northeast of Belize City, this sanctuary protects the endangered black howler monkey. Guided walks take you along jungle trails where you can observe these unique primates in their natural habitat, while learning about the conservation efforts that support them.

Cave Tubing & Ziplining

Experience a mix of adventure and nature at Caves Branch Archaeological Reserve. After a scenic 30-minute rainforest hike, you'll float through three stunning caves on an inner tube. Ziplining through the canopy can also be added for a thrilling combo tour. Most excursions include hotel or airport pickup.

Belizean Artisans

Take home a piece of Belizean culture by visiting artisan workshops across the country. The Belize Banana Fibers cooperative in Unitedville crafts beautiful items from banana tree fibers, while Orange Walk is known for woodcarving, pottery, and handwoven goods. Perfect for finding one-of-a-kind souvenirs.
